Shree Basuki School is 25 kilometres out of Kathmandu on a remote ridge with limited access to water. For years, the school’s seventy young pupils had to walk over a kilometre just to collect safe drinking water during the school day, and many of the local families had to spend hours daily just walking to far-off water sources.

In 2019 Smart Paani installed a Driftwood-funded rainwater harvesting system, bio-sand filter and a supply water pipeline at the school. This has increased school time for the kids and reduced water-borne diseases significantly, also increasing school attendance. Pupils are also permitted to carry home 3 litres of clean water every day, which allows their parents more time to work, without having to lose time on water collection.

WASH Education has also been provided to the school club and 5-year maintenance is also be provided.

There are countless schools in Nepal in a similar predicament to Shree Basuki, so Driftwood will continue to work with Smart Paani to install rainwater harvesting and bio-sand filtration systems, one school at a time, through the generous support of donors.
